Ankura 2005

A Brief Report...

NISB(NIE IEEE STUDENT BRANCH) had its annual technical fest “ANKURA” for the year 2005 in the month of may from 7th to the 9th. The chief guest for the event was Mr. Rajani Kanth Katragadda, Associate Vice President, Infosys Technologies Ltd. He gave a very inspirational talk emphasizing the need for events such as “ANKURA” which can help in the overall development of the student’s character. The inauguration was followed by a National level Paper Presentation Contest ‘PRINCIPIA INVENTIA’ . The first prize was secured by Devadutta D Ghat from MSRIT , Bangalore on the topic SWIPE: Estimating the angular, linear and instantaneous velocity of a rotating pulley using a microcontroller. In the afternoon session, there was a talk on ‘WIRELESS TECHNOLOGIES’ by one of the alumni of NIE Ms. SEEMA RAO from IBM. She is currently working on the development of IBM’s Web Sphere Embedded Suite for pervasive devices. In the evening, there were the preliminary rounds of ‘XOR.C.ist’ C PROGRAMMING and ‘LAKSHYA’, Gaming Contest.

 

The second day was flagged of by the prelims of ‘QUID AGIS HOMME’-General Quiz and ‘ADHYANA’ the management event. This was followed by a talk on ‘THE DARK SIDE OF SECURITY’ by KALYAN VERMA . Kalyan was working in Yahoo! for more then 3 years and has received the Global Yahoo! Super Star award for his work in the security space. The talk mainly focused on the cryptographic methods employed and their pros and cons. The loopholes present in INDIA’s e-commerce sites were highlighted by a live demonstration of purchasing gizmos without even having to pay a buck. In the afternoon session, there was a talk by one of INDIA’s leading innovators and whom many consider the father of Linux in India Mr. ATUL CHITNIS from EXOCORE CONSULTING on ‘LINUX ON DESKTOP’. The talk focused on the point that innovations can happen only during the student days and the need for the students to come out with something new, innovative beneficial to larger sections of the society.
